Equipment and Location

This is the former Air Force Radar Site on Mt. Hebo, on the Oregon Coast. Our repeater group ( has our equipment in this building, which is the former telephone company building from the 1960's when the base was active. We're inside the fenced perimiter, 3010' elevation in the coast range, about 8" of snow on the ground, we were working on some remote cameras and some minor repairs on ham repeaters while waiting for the pass. Equipment is a Gel Cell battery pack in the ammo box, Icom 706 radio, Panasonic Toughbook in the snow running the tracking software and an arrow handheld antenna with a 'home brew rotator'. We found some increase in signal when changing polarization, but the signal was quite readable no matter where we pointed the yagi, i was hoping for a slight amount of gain on the transimt path. Thanks to Matt KD7VUG for steering the antenna, and Dan KK7DS for the video coverage.
