Equipment Suggestions

Hello everyone,
I'm a recent ham (VA3JUV) and my goal was one day to contact the ISS.
After some extensive research I came up with system:
Antenna - OSCAR Hy-gain VB216-SAT
Rotator - YAESU G-5500
Controller - ARS universal antenna controller
Tx/rx - no decision yet.

Can anyone confirm that this is a good setup for ISS contact b4 I go out and invest money on it?
Thank you

School Contact today with Ann Arbor?

What happened with the school contact?

I heard N0EFT on the "downlink" frequency 145.800 calling for NA1SS. The question is how was I able to hear them in Manitoba when my antennas were pointed to the ISS. Was the radio on the ISS in repeater mode?

Will be interesting to hear what happened.

Hope the kids are not too disappointed, they might try again.

Programming Help For 2 Meters?

I'm trying to get all set up for an ISS contact on my own (random contact).
I have the freq's and need to get them programmed right. I have a Yaesu VX-170 and was told that there may or may not be a negative offset of 300Khz.

I also need help getting the radio programmed correctly with the up and down links. The person I talked to said it may take a few memory channels, but that it would work out.

Thanks for anyone's help here!

The contact on June 8 marked the 33rd school contact for Sunita Williams. That is just four shy of the record set by Bill McArthur during Exp 12. This is expected to be Suni's last contact before returning to Earth on STS-117.

ISS amateur radio status report

ISS amateur radio status report

Some short-term reconfigurations to the Kenwood radio, located onboard the International Space Station, were attempted yesterday, with limited success.

The preset channels that are used for many of the day to day operations are still inaccessible. The good news is that a few of the more commonly used configurations were able to be stored in the radio.

One of the modes that was able to be partially restored was the packet system but the operations will be on 145.825 simplex. General voice communication as well as configurations to support school contacts were also saved.
