How do I get started with Packet Radio, for ISS in particular?

I have never done Packet Radio and would like to use it to communicate with the ISS. What equipment and software do I need? I see TNC units on eBay, but unsure whether to buy. I have a Kenwood 2M transciever. Thanks,
Mike Glass

Question regarding ISS BBS (or PMS)

Hi,

I was able to hear the bulletin board in Romania but I don't know how to connect to it. Do I need to create an account first or is it sufficient tu issue C RS0ISS command? Is there any good tutorial on this subject?

Thank you,
Regards,
Zoli

new upload frequency packet

I have only heard the ISS at 145.825 but there were no stations digipeated. Is there an upload shift used on the repeater? -600KHz?

how do i send a message to a particular person

i have received a direct message from someone via the ISS using packet and i want to send a message back but i am not sure i am doing it correctly because i seem to always get disconnected.

this is what i am doing

after i connect to the bbs. i type

w w1abc "W" for Write and then a space and then the call sign of who i am trying to send message to

i was under the assumption this is how you send a message direct to someone so it is waiting for them when they connect. am i doing this wrong?

thanks for the help

ISS APRS Sgate DX

Just a quick post to describe some success I've had with a simple APRS Sgate configuration. Call sign N8QH-10.

I've been running an APRS satellite gateway (Sgate) gating APRS RF traffic to the Internet from Sunnyvale, California (about 30 miles east of the Pacific coast). The farthest station I've gated thus far is N0AN-6 near Des Moines, Iowa; a distance of 1,515 miles, or about half way across the North American continent. Here is the packet:

20100704071159 : N0AN-6]APRS,RS0ISS-4*,qAR,N8QH-10:=4205.48N/09400.76WS73' Via Sat {UISS52}

My setup is a simple classic Marconi 19.25 inch vertical antenna feeding an Advanced Receiver Research model SP144VDG 24 dB pre-amplifier, a Kenwood TM-71 transceiver, AGWPE software TNC, and UI-View on a Windows XP platform.

Packet monitoring

This is a question for those of you monitoring to the packet transmissions.

I have heard some packet transmissions on the 145.825 Mhz on some recent passes over Arizona. Should I just dust off my old TNC or is their some good software that will do the job? I have access to Windows XP and OS X in the shack.

Thanks and 73,
