direct connect with iss?

brand new to packet and was wondering if it is possible to connect directly with the iss and how to go about it? for example, am i just sending "c rs0iss" or "c ariss" ?
or do i have to go thru the BBS
also my tnc is set for 9600 baud, do i need to restore it and set it for 1200 baud or will the tnc on the iss automaticly correct for baud rate differance?
i just downloaded uiss software but it looks like that is more for using the iss as a sat repeater. any info would be appreciated

Re: direct connect with ISS?

Hello Jim,

You can do only a direct connect with the ISS bbs via RS0ISS-11 (do not use other!).
After you are connected with the bbs you can also give this command:

L press enter key
That will show a list of messages wich other amateurs have posted in the ISS bbs.

R press enter key
To read an message from the ISS bbs messages list.

Direct connects

You can connect to RS0ISS-3 which is the keyboard interface to the radio but it is rarely hookedup. You will get an automatic reply if you connect successfully. Should work for RS0ISS-4 as well.

Connecting to the Mailbox (RS0ISS-11) works too but it is very difficult to do much if the ISS is busy relaying (via ARISS) traffic.

First

first: You change the tnc baud for 1200 beacause iss not correct automaticly.

second: to conect on iss BBS system you use rs0iss-11 or rs0iss-3. other unproto you use to aprs mode and ui-view software. Correct unproto for aprs is cq,rs0iss-3 or cq,ariss or ariss but remember this is for aprs mode not for packet mode.

third: for packet mode i use winpack software. Working good for packet connections and with AGW you connect via pc sound card.

Enjoy and also download ui-view for aprs mode

uiss is good but i like ui-vew.

packet mode

bbs: rs0iss-11
direct to other station via ISS: rs0iss-3

aprs mode

unproto: cq,rs0iss-3 or cq,ariss or only ariss

ISS Call sign:

The call sign of the Packet station has changed several times. As of December 22, 2003 the Mailbox address for the Kenwood D700 was "RS0ISS-11" and the Unproto address is "RS0ISS-3" / "ARISS". The address may change from time to time, please check the ARISS web pages or monitor the down link data to verify the address currently in use. Don't confuse a Zero with the letter "OH", RS0ISS or rs0iss (that is "rs 0 iss" the value in the middle is the integer Zero)

Kenwood D700 Address (Active)
Mail Box RS0ISS-11
Unproto RS0ISS-3 or ARISS

Ericsson PacComm Address (Inactive)
Mail Box RS0ISS-1
Unproto RS0ISS

Make sure that when you enter the call sign into your TNC Unproto command that you enter the correct call sign (Case is not important r = R)
