sstv
Hi I'm new to all this.I'm trying to receive sstv from the space station. But looking at your forums I see that they only transmit once in a while, could someone tell them to hang a camera out the window and leave it on...

SSTV activation
The SSTV system is currently limited to battery only operation. Since the VC-H1 is a bit of a battery hog (4 x AA = 6 hours of operation), the unit is only activated during special sessions. A power supply is under development that would permit eventual long duration operation.

Long Duration operation of the SSTV Cam
What would be nice, if at all possible, would be to put the cam on long term and on a different frequency.
I would be willing to bet that most of us would like a choice between catching an SSTV image vs APRS packet
during any given pass .. would love it ..

One radio
Operating on different frequencies might prove unlikely since we currently have just one radio available for Packet and SSTV operations. Further down the line, we might finally get some simultaneous operations going on UHF and VHF (in band ops would desence each other).

Hey Ken, is'nt the phase 1 radios still onboard. thought there was a pair of Ericson HTs, one for 2 meters and other for 75cm. maybe there is an option. 73 Mark.
Ericssons
They are aboard but have been unavailable for use since Exp 14. Working to get that changed .

I knew there was only one
I knew there was only one radio, but figure there must be a little room for just ONE MORE lil ole radio ? LOL
desence? will have to look that one up .. lol
I assume they cant agree to do it ..
It would be another great "public awareness" and school education idea.
Just think .. SSTV .. from the shuttle .. passes over schools .. they receive pictures ..
Anytime you are passing over .. like the NOAA satellites, but without the IR .. lol
Even better, but I KNOW you cant do this .. is to run it during EVA's .. However, I know
thats against the rules. Is there a current SSTV schedule ?
I wonder how many kids will that will inspire to join the space program ..
I assume that power isnt a problem with all those solar panels? hi hi ..
Just ideas of course.. but isnt that what the dreams of space exploration are based on?

Planning
I am working with the international partners to try and do some muliti mode operations but all the pieces have to be in place. Getting hardware built by volunteers, certified, flown and installed is unfortunately a long process.
You are correct that the system cannot be run during EVA activity but the view out the window is pretty much the same.
No set schedule for activities for the most part. The crew schedule is set about a week a head of time and that is when the times for school contacts are known. Other activities are on the crew's free time and occur without notice. For some special events, a schedule is posted but that occurs very rarely.
Too bad you weren't involved when Garriott had the SSTV system running for nearly a full week. That was a lot of fun. Once the power supply is available, then we can begin more regular SSTV operations.

SSTV repeater
An SSTV repeater (mode) would also be great! though that will take even more decency with passes of a few minutes and robot 36(second) pictures...
But black and white pics of 8 seconds might work. And a lot of patience of course ;-)

SSTV Nightmare
I can't imagine anyone in a populated area every successfully getting through without a lot precorrdination and planning. Guess you could try next time the crossband is active.

SSTV QSO's a dream?
Anyone in EU in for a SSTV QSO in B/W 8 when the crossband repeater is active?
