Doubts on the choice of antenna

IW0HJR – May 18, 2008 – 12:20

Hello everyone.
Like many people, I do not know the possibility of using motorized antennas in elevation.
Able to use only antennas with vertical polarization must now update my system antennas.
At the time of MIR I used with satisfaction antenna type DISCONE, but the fact of working with a large band penalizes lot yield and introduces unwanted disturbances.
I replaced the DISCONA with a V2000 I found that the signals for high angles of reception have deteriorated.
With its faults the DISCONE was better for this type of use.
Now I do not have any antenna, as well as for HF, and I think about how to implement the part for the V / UHF.
My first interest was for a vertical antenna type X-50, because of its lobes irradiation declared.
Then I took into account an X-510 and the second descriptions should have a lobe of irradiation much crushed on the horizon.
I believe that this will penalize traffic via satellite.
It appears that the X-50 is most appropriate although band 70CM does not seem very satisfying, being a 5 / 8 lambda.

In your experience would you deal with a better X-50 or an X-510?
If I take into consideration the construction of a double Turnstile banda or a BIG WHEEL (even if only horizontal polarization) would be better?

Last thing is that I use 60 meters of coaxial cable.
I already have a preamplifier duoband ready to be installed.
I would be happy to work well the ISS and receive enough LEO satellites.

I ask your opinions.

A greeting and thanks.

Possible antennas

Sounds like you want an antenna system to work for numerous satellites. The ISS is fairly easy to work with a dual band vertical due to its higher output power but that won't do you much good for most of the other satellites. Since using an AZ-EL tracking system is not feasible, maybe you could use a pair of eggbeaters. With one on 2 meters and the other on 430 (with a pre amp) you will have excellent coverage on high passes in addition to coverage at lower elevations.

Kenneth Thanks very much for

Kenneth Thanks very much for your reply.
You have understood my situation very well!
I treasure your advice that, unfortunately, follow those that I thought myself.
At this point drop the idea of permanently collinear antennas.

Already have a antenna eggbeaters for 70CM that have yet to mount.
Now I should build or buy one also for 2 Meter.
I sincerely believe that in Italy antennas are little known because we do not speak for almost anything in radio.
It 'a pity.

Take preamplifiers (single 2 M and 70cm) and two EGBBEATER antenna.
I believe you.
Thanks really for your advice.
You have been very kind.
