The ISS BBS??

N2NRJ – January 26, 2008 – 20:08

I have a question for the group.... I've noticed lately that people are connecting to the ISS BBS on most every pass.....and I've also noticed that the stations that are connecting are new calls that I haven't seen before. Have they just not read...or done any leg work to understand accepted protocol ....?? I thought I read awhile ago that people using the BBS should use the later passes....is this etched in stone or do I just need to accept the fact that I can't digi my aprs info during these passes?

Any help in clearing this up would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks;

So if you get a message
" RS0ISS-11>W0JPH [01/26/08 21:22:44] :
" *** RS0ISS-11 BUSY "
" *** DISCONNECTED {01/26/08 21:22:44]
Do not try until I see a from the other station?

Constant retries

Since the ISS BBS only permits one user to log in at a time, doesn't it make sense to wait unit they log off or are disconnected since you can't get logged in until they are logged out. Continuing to try and log in just slows the whole process down.

Ignorance is not an Affirmative Defense

KB2HSH – January 27, 2008 – 01:17

Gary:

I would also have to agree that the BBS shouldn't be used during ON-PEAK times. I compare it to driving around with your high-beams on in the car...just because they're there doesn't necessarily mean they should be used casually.

In the practice of law, as far as NYS is concerned, ignorance of a specific law doesn't allow a defendant to use it as a defense. Likewise, even if the ham doesn't realize that it's bloody rude to waste a pass with BBS access, doesn't give him an excuse.

I think polite, tactful, and direct guidance via e-mail (or whatever) might help.

Few Rules

N5VHO – January 26, 2008 – 20:51

The only rules in place are those regarding the operation of a station imposed by the national licensing agency. Recommendations (gentleman's agreements) are provided to try and make operations more efficient and practical.

FM satellites can only support one user at a time so in effort to maximize that usage, the following are a few suggestions.

Accessing the BBS is a channel intensive operation and should not be done during higher user usage times. It is sort of like making a phone patch through the local repeater for 10 minutes during the evening commute. No rule says you can't but it just isn't courteous.

Another thing that helps is turning off all unattended beacons. If you are not at the station, don't transmit so others who are at the keyboard can.
