Will the ISS be on the air on October 20, 2007 for JOTA

Larry B – September 19, 2007 – 19:36

I was wondering if the ISS is going to be on the air on October 20th 2007 for the Jamboree-On-The-Air Boys Scouts of America event. It is very much like the nation wide event Field Day. However this event isworld wide. This year marks the 50th anniversary for the event. (depending
on which web site you look at). I would like to help the scouts in our area contact the ISS if possible with either voice or packet. If anyone has any information please let me know.

Not sure

Clay has been asked about operating during JOTA but no reply has been received. With the initial success of getting packet on last week, it appears that mode might be available.

Another complication is the fact that a Soyuz will launch on Oct 10 and will bring the Exp 16 crew to the ISS. The Exp 15 crew is not scheduled to depart until Oct 21. A Shuttle is schedule to launch on Oct 23. This makes for a very busy time period and reduces the crew's available time.

It is still a few weeks off so it might be possible that everything is back to normal and ISS would be available for some sort of activity but we will have to wait and see.

JOTA - Maybe

N5VHO – October 5, 2007 – 00:12

As mentioned before, that is a very busy time for the crew on the ISS. Clay can't make any promises but he has indicated that he will try to make some JOTA contacts if his schedule permits. Standard voice frequencies will be used (See NASA link below). Packet should be available on 145.825 simplex when the crew is not available. The packet system will be shut down a few hours prior to the undocking of the Soyuz craft returning Oct 21 with the Exp 15 crew of Yurchikhin and Kotov plus the space flight participant Shukor.

Still a gamble

No additional word on if anyone will be on the air due to the Soyuz undocking scheduled for 0710 UTC on Oct 21. Guess we will just have to wait and see. I think the best chance is Friday but one should be ready for anytime.

Sorry.. my earlier comments was meant for Malaysian scouts.. therefore, I’m extracting it back from this forum.

Malaysia will definitely take part in the JOTA as usual. Furthermore this year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary of independence. Incidentally, this year is also the 50th JOTA.

Thanks.
