LISTS OF CONTACTS

Hello to the group. Has anyone come across or does anyone know if the ISS or NASA has a logged list of amatuer radio contacts besides the school contacts that can be viewed?

Thanks........

No general contact logs

To my knowledge, the crews do not post their personal logs of contacts with amateur radio ground stations. If it did exist, it would be well over 4000 contacts entered.

ISS Contact logs

If true, how does the QSO get confirmed and QSL's be sent out if no checking is undertaken? I would like to think that my QSL from my contact with Bill McArthur is authentic and not the result of me just sending my card on the off chance that no-one would check!

Not posted

Note that I said that they are not posted. Maybe I should have been clearer when I said "it does not exist". It does not exist in a published format might have been better.

re: ISS Contact logs

Hi!

Although the logs of the ISS crews are not available online like one might expect from a normal ham DXpedition, there are logs that the QSL managers can refer to. Bill McArthur logged his contacts, and N5VHO received copies of those logs throughout that ISS expedition.

As for thinking that your contact with Bill (or any ISS crewmember) is authentic... did you record your QSO(s)? I used a small tapeless voice recorder during each of my QSOs, and those recordings are now in the form of MP3 files. Those recordings have also gone to some other hams, who wanted a copy of Bill's audio for their contacts even though I did not have the audio from the other ground stations in those files. Bill also autographed my NA1SS QSL cards from those QSOs.

A question for N5VHO

This may have been answered earlier, but I'm curious if there's any possibility of mantaining an online list of contacts made here on this website, other than packet contacts? I think it was great that K5ATL was able to get confirmation here by asking here in the forum. Maybe that would be just as good as updating an online list....Thanks.

Ask the admin

You might ask the IFC admin if he would be willing to develop an area where stations could report their contacts in a specific format.

tell me what you think

Developing such an area is no big deal. I can do it.
What do you think about this:

1) Vinny IZ0ZZZ has a voice contact with the ISS. Vinny ignores IFC since he does not have a computer. (Otherwise he would be a member... hehehe)
2) Franz DL0LLL hears Vinny's contact and decides he wants to report it on the IFC log.
3) Olivier F0FFF hears the contact as well, so he confirms the report made by Franz.
4) Many others in Europe confirm Vinny's contact. The IFC site marks the report as confirmed.
5) A list of confirmed contacts populates a searchable online database.

Better ideas?

or put the log(s) online?

Or if the logs could be posted online... sorta like DXpeditions. Maybe omit the QSO time, just list date and callsign worked, maybe the frequency as well since there could be some UHF QSOs in the mix. There are sites that can take care of this, or there are applets that let you do this without needing access to a database to store the information (I do that for my XE2/ contacts on my website). By holding back one key piece of data (QSO time), you aren't giving away all the data someone would need to get a QSL card. Or hold back both the date and time, and just list the calls worked, with the call appearing for each QSO. Maybe indicate the crewmember who made the contact along with the other data.

Just some thoughts on a Saturday night...

ISS Contact logs

Hi Patrick,
No, I know my contact was genuine. As far as recording it was concerned that would have been a bit difficult as I was southbound on US41 at the time with a mobile radio for the uplink and an h/t out of the window for the downlink! Great fun but probably illegal (and Lee county Sheriff's Department dont need a whole lot to pull you over :)

What I was inferring was based on the earlier comment where it appeared that no logs were kept and that in fact, anyone could claim a contact and get a QSL in return. That has now been cleared up!

LOGS

N5VHO if you do have those logs, could you possibly see if I was written in on one? It would have been under my previous call K5ATL. QSL card is from 26th of March. Thanks..........
