ISS Fan Club Tracking s/w

Blexcroid – February 26, 2006 – 22:46

I love the ease of the user interface on the ISS fan club tracking program however I've noticed substantial differences between the pass predictions from it compared to other prediction s/w. Last night the prediction was about 4 minutes earlier than the ISS. I also sometimes find the attitude & azmiuth to be significantly different as well. Is there anything a user needs to do to correct for this for their local area? The location I am using is less than 1 mile from my station, so it should be relatively accurate.
Thank you in advance.

why use orbitron? wxtrack

issnut – April 14, 2007 – 22:01

why use orbitron? wxtrack allows you to use window icons for your satellites. has 3 windows so you can have one for iss and one for ham sats and another weather sats.thats how mine is set up.Great tracking software.

Is it really off or is just the size of the icons making it look off?

I have to agree. I think

I have to agree. I think this web site's prediction is off slightly. Here's a screenshot that I took just a moment ago, showing this web site next to Orbitron (with fresh keps from celestrak.com). I made sure to reload a fresh copy of the issfanclub.com home page and then I took the screen shot almost instantly so that there would be no delay. As you can see, issfanclub.com shows the station solidly over the center of Africa, whereas Orbitron shows it slightly to the west of that position.

Hello,

I will check the little iss globe accuracy when I go home.
The ISS tracking, by the way, is not connected to that image and is absolutely perfect.
I use to compare it with my installed software and they give identical results.
I know that the tacking is ok because I constanly monitor real AOS/LOS times.

tracking the ISS

One other site that you could use is the AMSAT web site:

http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/tools/predict/index.php

Select ISS, put in your latitude and longitude (elevation in meters would also help, but not mandatory), and it will show the track for the next 10 to 50 passes. There is also an option once you see the pass prediction times where the ISS is shown on a world map. It gets updated very regularly, and is another way to confirm what you see here or in other programs.

Good luck!

Blexcroid,

just make sure you are using fresh keplerian elements on the other programs you use.

Alain--
Thanks so much for your response! The Keps are fresh on the other programs (I have a Space-track account) and update them daily.
Currently the "globe" (in the upper left corner) is telling me that the next pass is 2 hours 50 minutes away but the tabular data is telling me I have a pass in just over an hour. VERY strange.
I love the interface on the program much better than "Brand N" and "Brand S". Wish I could figure out what I'm doing wrong. . . .

hi alain,
Im fairly new to the site, but i had scimilar problems when i started tracking the ISS too.
I tried satscape and orbitron also at first and was getting exactly the same problem as you, in that the three different programmes were giving me totaly different readings.
I knew the tracking software on the iss fanclub site was correct for me, as id used it several times and saw the iss no problems.I found that i had to re enter my correct location and update the keplerian elements, that did the trick for me, and all is now well.
my favourite is satscape, as it gives u 3D and 2D views.

I also find the tracker to be off. It is now telling me that I have a pass in 22 minutes but it has already passed.
