NASA Sets Briefings to Preview Next Space Shuttle Mission

NASA will hold a series of news media briefings May 1 to discuss the upcoming space shuttle Discovery mission, STS-124. NASA Television and the agency's Web site will provide live coverage of the briefings from the Johnson Space Center, beginning at 8 a.m. CDT. Questions also will be taken from participating NASA locations.

Discovery's 13-day mission is targeted for launch to the International Space Station on May 31. It is the second of three flights to launch components of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory. The shuttle also will deliver the lab's robotic arm system that will support operations outside of Kibo.

An International Space Station Expedition 17 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Orlando, Florida, USA on 21 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:48 UTC.

The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over most of the Western USA. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Audio from the QSO is planned to be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101 377) and *JK1ZRW* (277 208) servers during the contact.

Expedition 16's Whitson Hands Over Command of Station

Expedition 16 Commander Peggy Whitson officially handed over command of the International Space Station to Expedition 17 Commander Sergei Volkov. Thursday's ceremony took place inside the U.S. Harmony Node.

The station crews have shifted their sleep schedules in preparation for Saturday morning's Soyuz TMA-11 undocking. Whitson and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko will return to Earth with South Korean spaceflight participant So-yeon Yi.

Whitson broke Michael Foale's cumulative time-in-space record on Wednesday. She will have accumulated 377 days in space by the time she lands in Kazakhstan.

An International Space Station visiting crew ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at the National Science Museum of Korea, Daejon, Republic of Korea on 18 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 01:35 UTC.

The contact will be a direct between stations HL0ARISS and HL0HQSC. The contact should be audible over most of Korea and parts of Eastern Asia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in Korean.

The National Science Museum, as an umbrella organization of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is open to anyone and anytime to present the interesting, latest information, science and technology policies and achievements of scientific R&D.

1. Upcoming School Contacts
Central Middle School in Parsippany, New Jersey, has been slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, April 14 at 17:03 UTC. An essay and presentation contest will be held to determine which students will speak with the astronaut. The New Providence Amateur Radio Club will assist with the contact. The event will be available through a live transmission to all local schools using amateur band fast scan television. The school will notify CBS, NBC, ABC, New Jersey 12, the local and state newspapers, New York Times, USA Today, local and state elected officials, Board of Education members, district personnel, and New Jersey Education Association of the event.

The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and N2XJ. The contact should be audible over most of the Eastern USA. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English.

The Parsippany Troy-Hills Township School District is the largest school district in Morris County, New Jersey totaling over 7000 students.

Expedition 17 Welcomed Aboard Space Station

Commander Sergei Alexandrovich Volkov and cosmonaut Oleg Dmitrievich Kononenko of the 17th International Space Station crew docked their Soyuz TMA-12 with the orbiting laboratory's Pirs Docking Compartment at 8:57 a.m. EDT Thursday, marking the beginning of their six-month stay aboard.

With Volkov, a lieutenant colonel in the Russian Air Force, and Kononenko was spaceflight participant So-yeon Yi. She is a South Korean flying under contract with the Russian Federal Space Agency.

Yi will return to Earth with Expedition 16 crew members Commander Peggy Whitson and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko in their Soyuz TMA-11 on April 19. Expedition 16 launched to the station Oct. 10.

An International Space Station visiting crew ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at the Han Gwang Boys & Girls High School in Pyeong Taek City, Gyeong Gi Province, Republic of Korea on 13 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:57 UTC.

The contact will be a direct between stations HL0ARISS and HL0HQSC. The contact should be audible over most of Korea and parts of Eastern Asia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in Korean.

Han-Gwang school was founded in Pyeong-taek city in 1955 by a christian. Now it consists of 4 schools under the same name, Han-Gwang (boys' junior & senior high school and girls' junior & senior high school). Four Schools have about 250 teachers and about 5,000 students. Especially it has one Bible class a week and one worship service where every student takes part in it every Monday.

Expedition 17 Crew Headed To Station

After Tuesday's successful launch, the Expedition 17 crew members are headed to their new home aboard the International Space Station. Commander Sergei Volkov, Flight Engineer Oleg Kononenko and spaceflight participant So-yeon Yi launched at 7:16 a.m. EDT in a Soyuz TMA-12 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Less than ten minutes later, the spacecraft reached orbit and its antennas and solar arrays were deployed. Expedition 17 will be welcomed by the Expedition 16 crew after docking to the orbiting laboratory, scheduled for Thursday.

1. Upcoming School Contacts
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with Osnovna skola Pazin in Pazin, Croatia on Monday, April 7 at 14:52 UTC. Eight hundred students are enrolled at the school which has offered technical classes in robotics, electronics and computer science for the past ten years. Students from Pazin's two high schools are also expected to attend this event. The schools hope to pique the students' interest in space and electronics through this educational activity. The audio for this event will be fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377)
